Sir,
With reference to your Despatch No. 128 of the 16th of last April, I have the honour to inform you that Don Jésus M. de Zuniga absconded from this Colony on the 1st ultimo, owing to debt. His locum-tenens, Don Jesus Gonzalez, died of plague during last month. For a time, therefore, there was no Officer in charge of the Spanish and Peruvian Consulates.
2.
I am now, however, in receipt of a letter from Mr. V. J. O. Whiley, who states that he has received telegraphic instructions from Consul-General Mesa of Peru, at Yokohama, to take charge of the affairs of the Peruvian Consulate in Hongkong.
3.
Mr. Whiley is the Manager of the Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada.
4.
So far as I am aware, no one is in charge of the Spanish Consulate in this Colony.
